400 E Randolph was built in 1963 and named Outer Drive East since it was east of Lake Shore Drive at the time. Lake Shore Drive was later moved to the east to remove its s-curve.
Back then it was the world’s largest apartment building. The high-rise houses 955 condos in its 40 stories. The building has a domed indoor pool, bike room, sauna, sundeck, exercise room, common laundry, party room, racquetball and basketball court. It also has a dry cleaner, hair salon, restaurant and bar, and a food mart. Parking is leased. Pets are ok.
The T-shaped building provides 3 types of views. Those units on the south side of the building (top of the T) have outstanding views of Lake Michigan, Millennium Park and the city. Those on the north and west side of the building have excellent city views and some have small views of Millennium Park to the south. Those on the east and north side of the building have partial lake views which are interrupted by other high-rises.
