400 N Lake Shore Drive has an identity crisis

Last week I participated in a focus group of Chicago luxury real estate agents. A real estate marketing firm wanted our insights on the market for the Chicago Spire. The Chicago Spire is a proposed megatall, ultra-luxury condominium. Currently, it’s only a vacant lot with a large hole in the ground since construction was halted in 2008. However, the developer was recently given a year to secure financing again.

Participating in the focus group got me to thinking about the address for the Chicago Spire, 400 N Lake Shore Drive. After doing some research I discovered that many people think it’s the address for the Ohio Street Beach!

Google “400 N Lake Shore Drive” and by page 2 of the search results you’ll see that many websites have 400 N Lake Shore Drive as the address for the Ohio Street Beach. Google “400 N Lake Shore Drive” and “Ohio Street Beach” at the same time and you’ll get dozens of search results.

Some of the websites are fairly reputable:

Anyone who is familiar with Streeterville should recognize right away that the address of 400 N Lake Shore Drive makes no sense for the Ohio Street Beach. The beach is across Lake Shore Drive and just south of 600 N Lake Shore Drive. Thus, it should have a street number that is an odd number (being on the east side of the drive) and a street number a little less than 600. It’s just north of 505 N Lake Shore Drive (Lake Point Tower), so the street number should be greater than 505, but less than 600.

So why do so many websites have 400 N Lake Shore Drive as the address for the Ohio Street Beach when it’s obviously wrong? Well, the beach is part of the Chicago Park District. Surely, they know the correct address for the beach, or do they?

On their home page click on Parks & Facilities and then click on Find a Park. For Park Name enter Ohio Street Beach and click Search. Unless they’ve updated their site you should get the same result as shown below.

You have to wonder how many beach goers have arrived at 400 N Lake Shore Drive only to be terribly disappointed. If the Chicago Spire project resumes, you have to wonder if some buyers will expect to be right on the beach.
