Cost of Heating Your Home in Chicago Metro Area Varies

The cost of using your fireplace depends where you live in the Chicago metro area. With subzero temperatures all day Sunday, I stayed close to my fireplace. As I tried to catch up on business expenses, I couldn’t help but wonder what the natural gas burning in the fireplace (and fueling my furnace) was costing me. So I did some digging and found not only what I’m paying, but what others in the Chicago metro area are paying. It turns out that what you pay for natural gas depends on where you live and varies significantly.

Natural gas rates are highest in the north suburbs served by North Shore Gas. The cost per therm this month is 95 cents.

City of Chicago residents are paying Peoples Gas 93 cents per therm this month.

The rest of the suburbs are served by Nicor Gas which is charging 65 cents per therm this month.

Stay warm over the holidays! :)

Hi Fran Bailey,
Thanks for the homework on this. My first reaction is WHAT?!…this is ridiculous! My second reaction is what can we do about it?? As a first time home owner of a gas furnace and fireplace, I anxiously wait for the new bills each month. Now that I know we and our North suburb friends are over paying, writing the check is even more painful.

Kathy
