Don’t Make Any Assumptions about Fencing for Your New House

Family Washing Their DogDogs are everywhere this week! The first family now has a Portuguese water dog. The north suburb of Wheeling is considering lowering the maximum number of pets allowed in multi-family housing from 4 to 3 after a resident with 5 dogs challenged the law. I met with a lovely couple the other night considering buying a house so they would have a yard for their boxer, Dodger, to play in.

Long before I was a Realtor, I made the mistake of buying a house with a yard that I thought could be fenced so my 2 dogs could run and play freely. It turned out that one of the lot lines wasn’t where I assumed it would be so the fencing wasn’t going to work out as planned. It was an unusual back yard with multiple levels.

Also don’t make assumptions about what kind of fencing you can have or where it can go. Most towns have their own rules for fencing. Many no longer allow chain link fences. Many have height restrictions or restrictions on exactly where the fence can be on a lot.

A nice, fenced yard is a great way to make your dog(s) happy!
