Lake Shore Place was built in 1926 and named the American Furniture Mart. At the time it was the largest building in the world. According to Wikipedia, “The building was converted by David L Paul to condominium and office space between 1979-84.” There are entrances on all 4 sides of the building.

The high rise houses 420 condos organized in 3 condominium associations (Tower, South, and Lake) within its 29 stories. Pets are ok. The building has an exercise room and pool. Utilities included in the monthly assessment include: air conditioning, cable TV, heat and water.

Parking in the 7 interior levels is owned and deeded. So each parking space has it’s own monthly assessment and annual property taxes. Some parking spaces may be available for rent. Parking spot prices are among the highest in the city with sellers typically asking $70K to $75K per spot. [continued below]

This is a great building to live in, if you prefer to avoid going outside in the winter or just want several basic shops and services all indoors steps away from your condo. Lake Shore Place has significant retail space including a Treasure Island grocery, a Walgreens Pharmacy and an Ace Hardware Store. There’s also a Cafe Descartes coffee shop, a Skin1 spa, a Scruples Salon and Spa, the Bistro Pacific restaurant and a dry cleaners. There are also several doctors’ offices including obstetrics, gynecology, internal medicine and gastroenterology.


Lake Shore Place apartments have a condo form of ownership. There are 1 to 3 bedroom condos. One bedroom condos have 1,000 to 1,548 square feet of space. Two bedroom condos have 1,250 to 2,877 square feet. Three bedroom condos have 1,600 to 3,316 square feet.

Cooking appliances are electric. None of the units have a balcony. Lake Shore Place penthouses are on floors 16 and 29 (the tower).

Views are fairly limited except for some penthouses and condos on the east side of the building which have lake views. There isn’t a building directly west, but that lot will eventually be developed.

Lake Shore Place is in the Streeterville neighborhood in downtown Chicago. It’s located along Lake Michigan between Erie and Huron at 680 N Lake Shore Drive. The original street address was 666 North Lake Shore Drive, but in 1988 the street number was changed to 680 since some people think 666 has a negative connotation.

The building is just north of the W Hotel. Navy Pier is 3 blocks south and a couple of blocks to the east. From the west entrance of the building Michigan Avenue is 3 blocks west. The Northwestern Memorial Hospital Campus is just west of the building.

The building currently has a Walk Score of 98 and a Transit Score of 91. The Red Line stop at Chicago & State is just over 0.6 miles away. The #121 Union/Wacker Express and #120 Ogilvie/Wacker Express bus both stop right by Lake Shore Place. Zipcar and I-GO car sharing services are just a block away.

The location has a Bike Score of 81. A Divvy bike sharing station is 2 blocks away from both the east and west entrances of the building.
