Lesbian SymbolBased on my clients’ experiences with Countrywide Home Loans, I didn’t think much of them, but I think even less of them now.

Recently a lesbian couple filed suit against Countrywide. According to Lambda Legal, the couple decided to move in together and share mortgage responsibilities. They contacted Countrywide, the mortgage company of the partner whose house they reside in. They followed Countrywide’s instructions on how to make the change, but were then told by Countrywide that the change to the deed was unauthorized and that the company did not recognize the lesbian couple as a family! Countrywide threatened to foreclose on the house, if the almost $80,000 balance on the mortgage was not paid within 30 days! Lambda Legal has filed suit on the couple’s behalf.

When shopping for a mortgage, gays and lesbians should inquire if mortgage companies are gay-friendly. Contact me for names of gay-friendly mortgage brokers in the Chicago area.

Fran – Luckily this couple was smart enough to contact Lambda Legal (who have done such a great job for the gay and lesbian community for decades now). Besides being discriminatory, Countrywide seems inept at business. I am truly shocked by this one!
