My closings that were delayed from last Tuesday (see previous post) took place on Thursday. The delay was caused by a mortgage company that sent the wrong questionnaire to my seller’s condo association and didn’t catch the mistake until it was too late. Unfortunately, the mortgage company wasn’t the only one who messed up. I found out later than my seller’s attorney knew the afternoon before that the closings would be delayed. She thought her assistant was going to inform my seller, but that didn’t happen. My seller didn’t find out about the delay until an hour and a half before her first closing was scheduled to start. That’s when I found out as well. The buyer’s agent called me at that point and told me what was going on. I then informed my seller. Getting the news the afternoon before would have been far less stressful and less inconvenient for my client. I would have also appreciated knowing as well!
So when talking to potential real estate attorneys, ask them if they or if an assistant will handle most of the communications with you. If it will be an assistant, make sure the assistant knows the best ways to reach you and how important it is that you be kept informed of any changes. Also make sure they have a cell phone number to reach you at since your phone line may be disconnected around the time you move. It may save you some stress.
