Mother-In-Law Houses Not More Expensive

in In-Law Houses

Adult and MotherThis week I heard from a woman interested in buying a house with a mother-in-law (also known as in-law) arrangement in the near northwest suburbs. She and her 90 year-old mother are currently sharing a one bedroom condo. No matter how much someone loves their parent, that’s a challenging situation.

With our current economic situation, I expect I’ll be hearing from more people looking for a home for themselves and a parent or two. Homes with in-law arrangements provide extra privacy and autonomy.

The good news is that homes with in-law arrangements typically don’t cost more than comparable size homes without in-law arrangements. Yes, there’s the added cost for a second kitchen, but it’s usually a modest kitchen and for families without a need for a 2nd kitchen, it may make the home less desirable.

Houses with in-law arrangements span the Chicago metro area price range from less than $200K to millions of dollars.
