Sneak a Peek, But Don’t Put Money on It

This morning’s print version of the Daily Herald has an article, “Sneaking a peek”, on Internet sites where you can see what your friends, co-workers and neighbor’s paid for their homes and the homes’ estimated values. Such sites have been around for several years, but recently they have gotten more numerous and more technically sophisticated. While sites such as, Zillow.Com and RealEstateABC.Com may dazzle you with impressive satellite photos, they still do a poor job of estimating home values. This is due to the fact that the estimates are based on public data of which a good amount is incomplete or wrong. As they say in information technology, “garbage in, garbage out.”

To verify what I’m saying, check the Cook Country Assessor’s Web Site for the following properties:

  • 600 to 700 Whispering Oaks in Palatine – This is not a new condo development, but there is no detailed information for these homes.
  • 6666 Hayes Ave., (Norwood Park) Chicago – The assessor’s site says this is a 1 story house. Drive by and you’ll see that it’s obviously a 2-story house.
  • 7527 N Sheridan, (Rogers Park) Chicago – This is not a new condo conversion, but there is no detailed information for these homes.
