THE BUILDING
Built in 1931 the renaissance revival style high rise designed by architect Rosario Candela houses 57 apartments on 23 floors. It is the only Chicago high rise designed by Candela who was known for designing New York City luxury apartments. “Chicago Apartments A Century of Lakefront Luxury” by Neil Harris states that New York based Douglas Elliman & Company and Turner Construction were also involved with the project.
According to Baird & Warner’s “A Portfolio of Fine Apartment Homes“, approximately 75% of the building was sold by 6 months before completion. Original apartments ranged from 6 to 18 rooms. Standard apartments ranged from 8 to 11 rooms. Original floor plans show that the apartments had maid’s rooms and servants halls.
Parking is on-site and leased. The rear entrance has a large porte-cochere which can accommodate several vehicles at the same time. The building has an exercise room. Utilities included in the monthly assessments include: cable TV, heat and water. Since it’s a co-op property taxes are included in the assessments as well.
As is typical with co-ops, an application and interview with the co-op board is required. Up to 50% financing is allowed. Rentals are not permitted which is also typical for co-ops in Chicago.

1500 N Lake Shore Drive is in the northeastern part of the Gold Coast neighborhood in downtown Chicago. It’s at the corner of Burton and North Lake Shore Drive. Chicago’s Lakefront is just on the other side of Lake Shore Drive. Lincoln Park is one block to the north.
A Potash Markets grocery store is 5 blocks away. A Walgreens Pharmacy is 7 blocks away.
The building currently has a Walk Score of 91 and a Transit Score of 83. It’s just under half a mile to the Red Line Stop at Clark & Division. The #151/Sheridan bus which runs north and south stops right on inner Lake Shore Drive. The #72/North bus which runs east and west is 4 blocks away.
