This week I toured the mansion for sale at 4518 S. Drexel Blvd. in Chicago’s North Kenwood District. It is designated as a Chicago Landmark.
The home was designed by Chicago architect Horatio Wilson. Wilson designed other mansions in the area including 4801 S Ellis Ave. He built a home for himself in the area.
There are 4 levels including a basement in this 10,000 SF home built in 1895. It has 6 bedrooms, 4 full bathrooms and one half bathroom.
When I toured 4518 S. Drexel Blvd. I noticed 5 features that make it stand out from other Chicago mansions for sale.
- 1. The original woodwork has been restored and there is a tremendous amount of ornate work.
- 2. Part of the ceiling above a huge room on the 2nd floor (original ballroom?) was removed opening it to another large room on the 3rd floor.
- 3. Numerous large mirrors surrounded by woodwork.
- 4. A coach house with a 4 car garage and three-bedroom apartment above
- 5. 6 fireplaces
The mansion was built for a Dr. Krause. Unfortunately, it was not maintained over the years. The current owner purchased it in 2010 as a foreclosure for $301,000 and had it completely renovated.
There is a deck on the back of the home off the kitchen. A roof deck could be added. There’s also a terrace on the front of the home on the second level that just needs finishing.
The lot has a lawn in the front and a little yard in the back. The vacant lot immediately to the north is owned by the city.
4518 S. Drexel Blvd. is located less than 9 blocks from President Obama’s home in Chicago. It’s 7 blocks from the Metra Electric Line 47th Street Station. 4518 S. Drexel Blvd. is roughly a mile north of the University of Chicago.
