THE CO-OP APARTMENTS
The apartments have a cooperative form of ownership.* They feature floor to ceiling windows, radiant heated floors and additional perimeter heating. Original walls are plaster. There’s 18 inches between floors. Cooking appliances are electric.
Since the building extends from north to south the half of the units are on the east side and have direct views of Lake Michigan. None of the apartments have balconies.
Some apartments have in-unit laundry. Adding in-unit laundry requires sacrificing a bathroom or combining units and sacrificing a kitchen or bathroom. If you are considering purchasing a unit and adding in-unit laundry, check with the buildings’ management for the current policy before you buy!

THE BUILDING
880 N Lake Shore Drive is part of the same-co-op as 860 N Lake Shore Drive. They were designed by renowned architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and were known as the “Glass House” apartments since no other high rises at the time had so much glass. Both buildings were added to the National Register of Historic Places and designated Chicago Landmarks.
860 & 880 N Lake Shore Drive were built in 1951 and house 250+ apartments combined within their 26 floors. There are a maximum of 8 units per floor in 880.
As with the minimalist style the amenities are also minimalist. There’s a door person, exercise room, meeting room and common laundry. Dogs are not allowed. Parking in the building can be purchased or leased.
The monthly assessments include all utilities (minus Internet and phone), the building’s mortgage, on-going maintenance and property taxes. Since this is a co-op an application is required. It includes 3 letters of reference, an interview and an extensive credit check. Rentals are rare since owners may only rent out their apartments for a maximum of 2 years.

THE LOCATION
880 N Lake Shore Drive is located between Chestnut and Delaware. Chicago’s Lakefront is just on the other side of Lake Shore Drive. The Magnificent Mile on Michigan Avenue is 2 blocks away. The high rises have a Walk Score of 89 and a Transit Score of 84. The Red Line Stop at State and Chicago is just over half a mile away.
