THE BUILDING
Built in 1972 as the corporate headquarters of Montgomery Ward & Co. the 28 story building has 245 units. It was designed by Minoru Yamasaki who also designed the World Trade Center in New York. Due to it’s design which incorporates concrete shear wall cores covered with travertine there are no corner units. It was converted to condos in 2005.
The facilities include a fitness center, bike room, community room, large dog run and observation/roof deck. There are also 24 hr. door staff and dry cleaners.
Pets are not only ok, but the condo association’s web site even devotes a page featuring them! Monthly assessments include: air conditioning, cable TV, heat, high speed Internet and water. The 350 deeded parking spaces in the heated garage can be purchased or leased. There’s no guest parking.
THE LOCATION
The Montgomery is located at 500 W Superior St in the northwest corner of River North one block south of Chicago Avenue and one block east of the north branch of the Chicago River. It’s 0.4 miles from a Jewel grocery in River West with smaller grocers closer by.
This is a quieter part of River North. There are several newer mansions just south of The Montgomery.
It currently has a Walk Score of 92 and a Transit Score of 88. It’s 6 blocks from the Brown and Purple Lines at Chicago and Franklin. The I-90/94 Expressway is 0.75 miles due west. The #66/Chicago bus which runs east and west is one block north. The #37/Sedgwick bus which runs north and south is 6 blocks away.
