It was originally a rental apartment building and called “The Breakers”. According to “Chicago Apartments” by Neil Harris, it was converted to a cooperative in 1995.
Unlike many vintage buildings, 199 E Lake Shore Drive has its own parking. It also has an exercise room, bike room and storage spaces. Pets are allowed. Rentals are allowed for a maximum of 2 years during ownership. The building is staffed 24 hours with a door person.
