As reported by Mary Ellen Podmolik in Sunday’s Chicago Tribune, research was presented at the recent Mortgage Bankers Association’s annual convention here in Chicago regarding the impact of homeownership on children. For Mary Ellen’s full article see, “Mortgage bankers cast wary eye on housing market“.
I found the actual research paper, “Measuring the Benefits of Homeowning: Effects on Children Redux“, on the Mortgage Bankers Association’s web site. The authors, Richard K. Green, Gary D. Painter and Michelle J. White found that:
- Children growing up in homes owned by their parents are more likely to stay in school.
- Girls growing up in homes owned by their parents are less like to bear children while teenagers.
- The only exception to #1 and #2 was when the parents made no down payment.
